Special Volunteer Opportunity: Help us Sift Compost!
We’re looking for volunteers to help us sift finished compost at our Fremont Compost Hub! This is a low-intensity composting activity that can be done while seated and is perfect for those looking to learn more about compost application and witness the final stage of the composting process. Register to volunteer on February 20 or February 27, from 8:30 am–11:30 am, for this special activity.
What is sifting?
Compost sifting is the process of separating fine, finished compost from larger pieces of organic material like twigs or mulch. We do this by passing finished compost through a mesh screen and collecting the fine material in a container.
Separating fine, finished compost from the enriched leftover mulch allows us to use each material in different ways. The finished compost is used for plants, and the enriched mulch is used for trees, weed management, and more.
Spots are limited for this small group activity. Register today!

Special Volunteer Opportunity: Help us beat mustard season!
Volunteer at our compost hub and help remove invasive mustard before it spreads into our compost!
Our Griffith Park Compost Hub is one of our largest sites, where thousands of pounds of food scraps are composted every week. Volunteers support every step of the composting process from building compost piles, to watering and turning them, to sifting finished compost.
During the rainy season, weeds and invasive plants begin to grow around our Compost Hub. We need extra volunteers to help us remove these plants before they flower and spread. Your support helps keep our Compost Hub running strong and ensures we can continue diverting food scraps from landfills.
