Open Silo is hosting a Urban Agriculture Happy Hour at The Greyhound in Highland Park on Thursday, June 28th! LA Compost will be co-hosting as a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing access to composting hubs and education in Los Angeles.
No matter what your field of work, study, or interest, we want to meet you! All who are passionate about urban agriculture or food issues are welcome. Bring a friend or colleague along. Dress is casual. Come anytime after 5 pm!
What will I be doing?
PART ONE: L.A. KITCHEN
Volunteers will meet at L.A. Kitchen where they will be greeted and oriented by L.A. Kitchen and L.A. Compost staff. Soon after you will jump into your hairnet, apron, and gloves, and begin prepping meals and/or farm boxes using reclaimed fruits and vegetables. You may be packaging, chopping, dicing, juicing, washing, zesting and more!
PART TWO: L.A. COMPOST
After an hour of food prep volunteers will drive or carpool 5-10 minutes over to the L.A. Compost Regional Compost hub located at The Audubon Center at Debs Park. L.A. Compost will provide you all the tools you need to turn food “waste” from L.A. Kitchen into compost. You’ll learn the basics of composting alongside experienced composters, there may be dancing.
PART THREE: AUDON CENTER AT DEBS PARK
After turning the compost and preparing finished compost, you’ll experience the beauty of The Audubon Center’s diverse ecosystem right in the heart of Elysian Valley.
PART FOUR: CONCLUSION
Following the activity with the Audubon center, we’ll gather under the shade for snacks and a discussion about reducing food waste, connecting to soil, and nurturing local ecosystems.
