Community Soil Health

Join us in cultivating thriving ecosystems from the ground up. Through hands-on workshops, educational resources, and collaborative projects, participants learn about the impact thriving soils can have on themselves and their communities.

Three ways to join us every month:

1:1 Microscopy Soil Sessions

Book an hour consultation to look at 2-4 samples under the microscope, and ask all your microbially curious questions!

What: Our Community Soil Health team will provide a deeper analysis and report of what we see in your samples. Must bring your own samples. Suited for those who want to learn more about the quality they produce through a home or community composting system.

When: Third Friday of every Month

Where: The Audubon Center at Debs Park

HOW IT WORKS:

1) Book a “1:1 Microscopy Session” via the link below.

2) Next you MUST, fill out the pre-session questionnaire that you receive in your confirmation email. Failure to do so will result in a shorter session and/or less thorough explanations of your samples.

3) Show up on time and prepared for your session.

4) Donate to support this program!

Community Microscopy Workshops

Discover the world that exists in our soils as we look through a microscope at microbial organisms.

What: A workshop featuring our Community Soil Health team will guiding attendees through their important role in our food and soil systems, and how we can best support them.

When: Check our events page for any upcoming Community Microscopy Workshops happening near you.

Community Soil Lab

Learn about your soil and compost samples at the brand-new Community Soil Lab at Cottonwood Urban Farm!

What: The Community Soil Lab is a space for community members to learn about soil health through a whole ecosystem perspective integrating biology, chemistry, physical properties, and community knowledge. Our Community Soil Scientist will support you with testing your soil or compost for water properties (moisture content, water holding capacity), pH, electrical conductivity, NPK, and Fungi: Bacteria (F: B) ratios.

When: Every second Saturday of the month, we offer opportunities to reserve a session with our Community Soil Scientist in our soil lab built in a shipping container on an urban farm!

The Group Lab Session runs from 10 AM - 12 PM and has the capacity for 3 participants to bring 1 sample each.

Where: Cottonwood Urban Farm in Panorama City

HOW IT WORKS:

1) Book a “Community Soil Lab” session via the link below.

2) Next you MUST, fill out the pre-session questionnaire that you receive in your confirmation email. This will inform you how to properly prepare your soil/ compost samples for testing.

3) Show up on time and prepare for your session. Sessions are run in groups of 3, and we need to start on time to stay on schedule.

4) Donate to support this program!

Lab Lessons

Following the morning Lab Sessions, you can also attend a soil health lesson led by one of our community soil scientists at 1 PM. Workshops are open to the public and topics are offered on a rotating basis. Details about this month’s topic and how to RSVP can be found on our Events Calendar.
