LA Compost Volunteer Code of Conduct

At LA Compost, we are committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all volunteers, staff, and community members. Our collective actions reflect our mission to build community through composting, and we ask that all volunteers uphold the following standards of conduct while representing LA Compost. The volunteer serves at the direction of the LA Compost staff onsite, who is responsible for enforcing the code of conduct.

Acceptable Conduct:

All volunteers are expected to demonstrate professionalism, respect, and kindness in their interactions with staff, fellow volunteers, and community partners/members. Volunteers contribute to a positive and welcoming environment by maintaining good working relationships and modeling LA Compost’s values of care, collaboration, and community.

Unacceptable conduct includes, but is not limited to:

  • Disparaging, gossiping about, or otherwise undermining onsite staff, volunteers, partners, or the organization.

  • Bullying, intimidation, or the use of offensive, inappropriate, aggressive, or threatening language or behavior.

  • Use of explicit or profane language around other volunteers, community members, or partner organizations.

  • Disruptive or uncooperative behavior that interferes with LA Compost’s operations or community spaces.

  • Discussing topics that single out any one political, cultural, or racial group may make fellow volunteers, partners, or staff feel unsafe or uncomfortable.

Volunteers who engage in unacceptable conduct may be asked to leave the site or may be dismissed from the volunteer program for a time period that will be determined by the situation.

Drug & Alcohol-Free Environment:

LA Compost maintains a drug- and alcohol-free environment to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants. Volunteers must not bring, use, or distribute drugs or alcohol while representing LA Compost or during any LA Compost-related activities.

Volunteers are expected to arrive ready and able to perform their duties safely and responsibly. Anyone who appears to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be asked to leave immediately.

Safety & Accountability:

Volunteers are responsible for following all safety guidelines and instructions provided by LA Compost staff. If you observe unsafe behavior or conditions, please alert a staff member immediately. The information we need is the volunteer's full name and the incident date.

Representation & Respect:

When volunteering with LA Compost, you are representing the organization in the community. This means you are acting as an ambassador of our mission. Please act in ways that reflect integrity, respect, and environmental stewardship. Volunteers are encouraged to engage positively, share knowledge thoughtfully, and support others in learning and participation.
