About the Workshop:

Join us at Carver Middle School Garden on Sat, February 24th for a weaving workshop where you'll learn to create your own natural hemp textile and proudly display it as a wall hanging in your home. Cardboard looms will be available for community members to weave their textiles, they can select from a variety of hemp yarns, twines, and ropes to personalize them. The first 30 minutes will be dedicated to discussing how textiles have shaped civilization and how hemp can play a role in guiding us toward a sustainable future. This workshop is open to all ages - from all walks of life. An invitation to get creative in the garden and connect to the ancestral practice of weaving by hand.

About the Presenter:

Alejandra is a dedicated hemp entrepreneur, educator, and activist committed to strengthening the people’s connection to the life cycle of materials that surround us. Her passion for the potential of hemp was ignited during her time studying Environmental Studies at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, where she actively engaged with the Industrial Hemp Alliance (IHA) - an organization dedicated to advocating for the diverse industrial applications of hemp. Alongside her colleagues, Alejandra organized hemp-centered networking events across various industries including construction, culinary arts, and fashion. She then obtained a position at Hemp Traders, the largest supplier of hemp products in the United States, where she contributed to various aspects of the business for three years. Currently, Alejandra is employed at Hemp Fortex, a leading manufacturer of sustainable fabrics specializing in hemp. She contributes to the growth and development of the hemp industry, playing a role in bringing sustainable and eco-friendly textile options to the forefront.

About the Workshop:

In this 3 hr workshop artist Liz Navarro will guide participants through the process of making a clay sculpture inspired by fairy houses. Participants will learn introductory hand-building techniques like pinching, attaching, and slab construction to sculpt a unique fairy house and then decorate it using clay flowers and imprints from nature. The pieces will be fired in the kiln and coated with a layer of glaze to make them part of your garden for many years to come. Pieces will be available for pick up at Cottonwood Farm 2 weeks after the workshop.

About this event

Soil for All: Compost Distributions invite community members to pick up compost directly from the compost hub where it is created. Bring your own container(s) to fill with nutrient-dense finished compost created by the community for the community! Compost is available while supplies last.

What else you should know: Please bring your own container(s) to fill with finished compost. You will be sifting compost outside with varying levels of shade. If you are not able to physically sift your own compost, please let our staff onsite know.

No prior composting experience is necessary.

Site Directions: The entrance is located at these map coordinates within the park 34°08'04.1"N 118°17'08.7"W.
